In his season-ending press conference on Thursday, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said the team would not look the same next season following its second-round exit against the Florida Panthers.

“There will be change moving forward. That’s just the nature of the business,” Treliving said. “We’ve gotta find a way to create the team, both between the ears and personnel, to be our best at the critical moments.

“There’s some DNA that needs to change in our team.”

Star forward and pending free agent Mitch Marner‘s future with the team has been among the most discussed topics in the wake of the Maple Leafs’ exit.

Treliving said he’s met with Marner and both sides are taking time to “decompress” after the season.

“I think Mitch is a tremendous player. I think he’s a star. We’re in that process right now. … We’re gonna meet as a staff, I’m gonna be in touch with Mitch’s representative and determine what’s best,” Treliving said.

“Do I think Mitch can succeed? Yes, I do. But … we can’t be rigid in our thought process of saying we can only do things one way.”

One change has already been made at the top when the team announced earlier in May that it would not be renewing president Brendan Shanahan’s contract. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley indicated he was not immediately looking for a replacement.

Treliving, 55, is entering his third season as GM of the Maple Leafs.

The team lost in the first round to the Boston Bruins during his first season before falling to the Panthers this season.

“We fell short of where we wanted to be and we fell short of where I thought we could be,” Treliving said.
