During her freshman season at college, Vanessa Borovilos had a sign above her bed reminding her of her goal to play at the U.S. Women’s Open. Now, her dream has been achieved. The 19-year-old is one of five Canadians set to tee it up this week at Erin Hills.
Dmitri Simashev and Daniil But are ready to make the move to North America.
The Utah Mammoth have signed the first-round picks and Yaroslavl Lokomotiv teammates to three-year, entry-level deals, the NHL club announced Wednesday.
Simashev, 20, was picked sixth overall by the Arizona Coyotes (now Utah) in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The six-foot-five Russian defenceman has played for the past two seasons with the Lokomotiv, helping the club win the KHL title this season.
Simashev had one goal and five assists in 56 regular-season games this year before notching one assist in 21 playoff games.
“We are thrilled to sign Dmitri to an NHL contract,” said Utah GM Bill Armstrong. “Dmitri has established himself as one of the top defenseman prospects in the NHL and we look forward to watching him play for the Mammoth for many years to come.”
But was picked 12th overall by Arizona in 2023.
The six-foot-six Russian winger had nine goals and 19 assists in 54 games this season.
“Daniil is a highly skilled forward with a great shot and playmaking skills who is coming off a career season,” Armstrong said. “We are looking forward to seeing him in a Mammoth sweater.”
